Hmm….

I think that I have forgotten how to make small talk.  Wait… I Never had that skill.  How do people develop that skill? I only care about the weather if it’s interesting or raining, I like rain.  I can talk about fashion, wait… No I can talk about style and what I like about some fashionable items.  What else do we have, my day? I help people with technical issues.  And really I don’t remember them as individuals, so my stories are limited there.  I could complain about work cause that’s fun.  So what else does small talk constitute?  Ideas, anyone?

Putting other people at ease, if necessary by chatting about things neither of you are particularly interested in, in the hope that eventually you will hit on something you both are really interested in. And then – away you go!

I think I prefer asking questions and seeing if they will ask me questions. Or playing darts or pool or Cards against humanity. Experiences build relationships, even if it is a relationship of the moment. That is a memory worth having. The ending or the never was are lessons but the experiences are life.

I love making small talk! And I love your question… Hard to define really. For me, it is a combination of showing genuine, if brief, interest in the person or persons you chat with. Using the situation of that moment as fodder for your chat, whether it is the location, mood, setting or current challenge. Connecting, if only for five minutes. In fact, You might enjoy my post on “Bus 39” which was all about a casual chat that cheered my day. Although I suspect it was more of a medium-sized talk… πŸ™‚
